Project 1: Paid Internships in Life Science Research

Fundraising for High School and College students who want to intern in a research lab.

While many Life Science companies complain that they cannot get qualified personnel, and while government officials at the federal and state level agree that something needs to be done, and while politicians running for office promise to fund all kinds of programs, and while economists estimate that lack of effective training restrains business growth and hinders competitiveness, the status quo remains the same.

We believe the majority of undergraduate college students majoring in Life Sciences never set foot in a research lab by the time they graduate. While in college, about four years of opportunity to work in a research lab goes to waste because the parties involved are not incentivized to be part of a training program. Most colleges do not require research internships at the undergraduate level. Labs that could provide the training are not even compensated for materials and supplies let alone salary compensation. Students are charged tuition to do an internship. How could anyone expect a student to spend time in a research lab under these circumstances.

Any student who wants to do an internship in a research lab should automatically get Federal Work Study (FWS) regardless of income level. The college should reward the student with credit without the student having to pay tuition. The lab that provides the research training should be compensated for both materials and supplies and for instructor’s salary. The federal and state tax code should be changed so that the labs that provide research training can get a tax credit based on the number of training hours they provide. Because such an environment does not exist, this where Qler comes in.

We know that many college undergraduate students would like to be part of a research project, but they do not know where to find a research project that appeals to their interests. Others, due to financial circumstances they have to work and they cannot afford any time to spend in the lab. Qler provides an opportunity for students to get a paid internship while they are interning at a research lab. The program has several components. First, Qler provides a platform for a student to get partial funding through crowd funding. The student applies to Qler for a Life Science internship funding. The intern is listed in the webpage “Sponsor an Intern” and donors can make a donation towards the student’s goal. The student only needs to raise half of the internship cost per semester. Then, Qler matches the other half.

Qler started working in this project with the University of South Florida (USF) and specifically with USF’s Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR). The student finds a research project approved by OUR and then the student applies to Qler for funding. Once funding has been attained, Qler gives a grant to OUR to be used specifically for the student’s internship. The grant includes compensation for the student’s time and the cost of materials and supplies. OUR hires the student as an OUR employee, but the student spends his/her time being trained at the research lab. OUR also provides the materials and supplies needed to the research lab. The student also registers for a course designated by OUR. However, the course is identified as zero credit so that the student does not have to pay tuition, even though the course is listed in the student’s transcript.
